Virtual Internship Case Study: Mosul Space, Iraq

Introduction

Mosul Space, an innovation and tech hub in Iraq, partnered with Learning Connected for remote micro-internships. Aisha, an International Relations and Arabic Language student, supported Mosul Space's mission to foster entrepreneurship and youth capacity development, significantly advancing their women's economic empowerment programme.

The Story of Mosul Space

Founded in 2014, Mosul Space is a nonprofit organisation focused on: 

  • Youth empowerment

  • STEM education

  • Women's empowerment

Activities include hackathons, capacity building programmes and community events to support local enterprises and enhance technical and business skills.

The Opportunity

Mosul Space aimed to boost the skills of women entrepreneurs in Nineveh, Northern Iraq, through a comprehensive training programme funded by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, Global Affairs Canada, supporting 20 female entrepreneurs.

 

Results

Over eight weeks, Aisha and Mosul Space's CEO, Salih Mahmod, collaborated online to:

  • Research and design training sessions

  • Organise and deliver hybrid sessions on social media and e-commerce in Arabic

  • Support the women’s economic empowerment programme

 

These efforts enhanced the skills and online visibility of the women entrepreneurs.
