Virtual Internship Case Study: School Farms, Ghana

Introduction

Schools Farms is a non-profit organisation working towards food and nutrition security and agriculture , vocational, and technical skills development in Ghana. Three students in BA Economics, BA International Relations and Global Development, and LLB supported Schools Farms’ mission for food and nutrition security, and ATVET skills development through the education system.

The Story of Schools Farms

Founded in 2014, Schools Farms is a company focused on:  

  • Supporting children through feeding programmes and educational initiative

  • Cultivating future agricultural leaders by providing access to agricultural skills that improve education and nutrition

  • Activities include providing hands-on agricultural skills training, and nutrition related programmes for students in rural schools in Ghana. 

The Opportunity

As social media content development and fundraising assistants at Schools Farms, the students worked towards creating impactful content that enhanced the company's visibility and reputation and identified potential donors and grant opportunities. 

Results  

Over eight weeks, the students and the Schools Farms team, Anna Asem, and the CEO, Alfred Adjabeng, collaborated online to:  

  • Refine and implement a memorandum of understanding for School Farms partner schools 

  • Assist in the drafting of an application for a grant  

  • Review and recommend online fundraising platforms to support School Farms work and diversify funding sources.  

  • Create marketing material that would increase School Farms visibility and attract donor retention by 20%
